Canoe tours through the Glan valley

Hiking on the Glan is a special kind of nature experience.

The perspective from the middle of the river opens up a new perspective when experiencing landscapes and cultural areas. Nothing has been dressed up here; all the views are authentic and the natural areas reveal themselves in rare diversity and originality. It is therefore essential that these sensitive areas are navigated with appropriate consideration and care.

The following section is currently open: Meisenheim - Rehborn - Odernheim am Glan

!!! Due to construction work, access in Meisenheim is currently only possible via Hans-Franck-Straße !!!

Profile

After starting at the entry point in Meisenheim, we drift leisurely under the "Iron Footbridge" and look to the left towards the town wall, which seems to hide something mysterious. Surrounded by water birds, we curiously go ashore approx. 20 m above the weir, maneuver our boats past the weir and then deposit them below the weir.

Behind Meisenheim, idyllic stretches of river stretch out again. After every bend, a constantly changing natural landscape emerges: calming green in countless shades. 200 m after passing under a three-arched stone bridge modeled on Roman construction, you pass a barrage on the left bank where the mill canal branches off to the still existing mill in Rehborn. Behind the village of Rehborn, you cross a bridge resting on wooden foundations. Now the Glan begins to form ever stronger meandering bends. After a gentle bend to the right, you reach Odernheim am Glan. After passing under a road bridge in the center of the town, you leave the river on the left bank at the Bannmühle mill before you are stopped again by a barrage.

You now end your tour at the foot of the Disibodenberg, where you will find the ruins of the monastery that once served as the home of St. Hildegard von Bingen. Before heading home, it is worth returning to Meisenheim. The largely preserved historic old town of Meisenheim with its half-timbered houses, aristocratic courtyards, town walls and romantic alleyways and squares, which create an almost medieval atmosphere, is the perfect place to end the tour. Numerous restaurants and cafés will give you a warm welcome.

Canoe navigation rules on the Glan

Information on canoeing on the Glan

The following rules apply to canoeing on the Glan in order to meet the requirements of the eco-water hiking trail being created there and to keep the environment to a minimum, the number of canoes is limited to 100 per day.

  • All trips are here to register online.
  • The boats are only used between 09:00 and 13:00 at official boarding points.
  • Canoe navigation times are set from 09:00 to 18:00, so that the river is free from disturbance by canoe tourism for around 15 hours
  • Up to and including June 30 of each year, navigation is only permitted from a water level of 108 cm at the Odenbach gauge
  • In order to ensure the lowest possible immersion depth, the 3-person kandier may only be occupied by 2 adults or 2 adults and 1 child or 3 young people of the appropriate weight.
  • Please follow the signs at the entry and exit points and the river markings along the way. If there are no markings, always paddle the river bends on the outside. In this way, you avoid touching the bottom on the gravel banks, which represent a sensitive ecosystem in the river and are always on the inside of the river bend. At the same time, you have a sufficient water level available to navigate the river without disturbance.
  • Paddle calmly, swiftly and as undisturbed as possible past bank break-off edges and other potential breeding habitats or those marked as such.
  • Avoid unnecessary noise and show consideration for the property rights and interests of other river enthusiasts and residents.
  • Only dock or undock at the points marked for this purpose.
  • Leave the river as you would like to find it.
  • The Nahe-Glan Association of Municipalities will monitor the rules of use. The instructions of the public order office staff must be followed.
